We sourced our 2016 syrah from Fox Hill Vineyard, 20 miles south of Elkton, but at 900’ elevation a relatively cool site for this variety. After the three warmest years on record in succession 2016, though a warm year, was cooler than 2013 thru 2015. The winter was warm, bud break and the start of the growing season early, with a cool July and few heat spikes resulting in a very long growing season. Harvest was October 12.
The wine is a deeply hued blackberry jam color. The aromas highlight that deep, dark blackberry impression mixed with ripe plums, wild herbs and a blend of white and black pepper spice. The flavors highlight the above while mixing in some tangy red fruit notes, red cherry and red currants. The entry is brisk and the acidity shines through, complimenting a bit of grippy tannins. This is a big mouthful of wine, with a long, complex and very food friendly finish. This wine would work well with hearty stews, cassoulets or just about anything from the grill, dry rubbed and slathered with BBQ sauce.
